GROUP PERSONAL PENSION PLAN

A group personal pension is a collection of individual personal pensions grouped together by a pension provider, following a request from an employer. Although they are sometimes referred to as company pensions, they are not in fact run by employers and should not to be confused with occupational pensions (which have different tax, benefits and contribution rules).

How do they work?
They are arranged by employers and governed by the rules for personal pension plans. Normally, the employer will contribute to the personal pension schemes and contributions are paid by payroll deductions through the workplace.

What are the advantages of group personal pension schemes?
It is far more likely that your employer will also pay into the pension scheme on your behalf than if you took one out independently by yourself. (As with occupational pensions, any contributions made by your employer will stop if you leave the company.)
Your employer may have been able to negotiate special terms with the provider, for example, reduced costs or flexible contributions. (You may lose these advantages if you leave the company.)
