About Chippenham
Chippenham is a market town in Wiltshire,
England, although the market is no longer of major
importance to the economy of the town. It has an estimated
population of over 40,000. The town is within the
North Wiltshire local government district and parliamentary
constituency in Wiltshire, England. North Wiltshire
District Council is based here. The largest employer
in the town appears to be a part of Westinghouse,
now a part of Invensys, who are quite busy with railway
signalling work, as they have been for many years.
Parts of their site are now occupied by a diverse
range of other companies. There are a number of other
industrial sites around the town. The main street
in town is pedestrianised by day, and car parking
is available at several sites around the centre. Short-term
parking is free in car parks around the town centre.
There are several pleasant cafes and other eating
establishments, and the possibility of a stroll along
the riverbank. There is also a nightlife scene, with
the Rose and Crown, Nero's and Buds 2000 being late-night
venues, although many people travel to Bath. The Severn
and Thames cycle route (part of Route 4) of the Sustrans
National Cycle Network passes through the town. If
you are a fan of walking, Chippenham is surrounded
by sparse countryside and there are several woodlands
in or in close proximity to the town, for example,
Bird's Marsh, Vincients Wood and Briars Wood. There
is not much tourist accommodation actually in Chippenham,
but some within a few miles, particularly along the
A4 Bath Road through Corsham and Box, or on several
local farms. Search Google with Chippenham "Bed
and Breakfast", you will find plenty. Chippenham
is one of the West Country’s most dynamic market
towns with a population of over 40,000. The combination
of the old and the new, the historic architectural
gems, modern shopping centres and nearness to some
of the country’s greatest houses and historic
villages, makes this town midway between Bath and
Swindon an ideal location for living, working and
visiting. Chippenham High Street Chippenham is set
on a prominent crossing of the River Avon and lies
between the Malborough Downs to the East, the Cotswolds
to the North and West and Salisbury Plain to the South.
Surrounding the Town are a number of stone-built villages,
including Lacock (National Trust), Biddestone and
Castle Combe. The great house and art treasures of
Longleat, Bowood, Lacock Abbey, Sheldon Manor and
Corsham Court are within easy reach.
