About Crawley
The village of Crawley remained relatively
undeveloped until the coming of the railway, in the
mid 19th century, but had developed into a small-sized
town of under 10,000 people by World War II, clustered
around the the main London to Brighton road (now the
A23). In 1947, it was designated as a New Town area
under the New Towns Act of 1946. Its development then
ballooned during the 1950s and 1960s, bringing it
to a population of around 60,000. Since that time,
the town has continued to grow, incorporating neigbouring
settlements. During the boom of the 1980s the town
boasted the lowest level of unemployment in the UK.
It is now bypassed by the M23. A large influence on
the town's development has been the nearby international
airport, London Gatwick Airport, which is contained
within the borough's boundaries. The airport is now
the busiest single-runway airport in the world, and
the sixth busiest overall. Crawley also has 3 railway
stations; Crawley, Three Bridges, and Ifield. It is
located on the southern end of the M23 motorway, near
Pease Pottage Service station. Crawley is hard to
beat for leisure - we have night clubs, cinema and
great eating in the town centre and a lively theatre
in a lovely woodland setting. In our neighbourhoods
there are pubs, play facilities, parks and community
centres. County Mall Shopping Centre, Queens Square
and the historic High Street offer the best mix of
shopping for miles around. There are also local shops
in every neighbourhood. Crawley is lucky to have some
great open spaces, including Tilgate Park, set in
400 acres and home to a golf course and nature centre.
We manage all of our opens spaces carefully for conservation,
and have won awards for our efforts.
