About Whitchurch
Whitchurch is a town in Hampshire,
England. It is on the River Test in pleasant country
20km from Newbury, Berkshire 19km from Winchester,
12km from Andover and 19km from Basingstoke. Much
of the town is a Conservation Area. Because of the
amount of wildlife in and near the river, parts of
the town are designated as Site of Special Scientific
Interest. It has excellent communications with a fast
rail link into London (Waterloo station, 1h05 travel
time) and two main roads that by-pass the town (A34
- a major north-south route, and A303 - a major east
west route). The village name is Anglo Saxon in origin,
and means 'white church'. It was first recorded in
909AD and appears in the Domesday Book but there is
evidence of occupation in the Iron Age. The river
provided the power for four mills. These were used
for finishing wool, milling flour, weaving silk and
making paper. The Silk Mill is a famous visitor attraction
that is still in operation today.
Present day
The population is 4,500. The town is a thriving friendly
community with many attractive residental areas and
some light industry. Good places to eat include the
Red House and The Hurstbourne (3km away on the B3400)
