Peacehaven is a coastal town in East Sussex,
England. It was founded by Charles Neville in 1914, with
the intention of creating a seaside garden city. As an
ANZAC camp temporarily occupied the site, it was originally
named New Anzac-on-Sea, but a newspaper competition found
a new name for the settlement. The Daily Express sued
Charles Neville over the competition, holding that it
was a scam, offering "free" plots of land in
the town as runner-up prizes, but issuing them only on
the payment of a conveyancing fee. Although the newspaper
won the case, the publicity benefitted the town. Peacehaven
lies by the South Downs, and is a quiet seaside resort.
It lies on the zero meridian. The town plays a part in
Graham Greene's 1938 novel Brighton Rock when anti-hero
Pinkie Brown intends to throw his girlfriend Rose from
the high cliffs which are part of the town.
